F.A.Q.

TPRS Basics

Q: What is TPRS?
A: TPRS (Teaching Proficiency Through Reading & Storytelling) is a story-based method that helps students acquire language through comprehensible input, interaction, and reading.

Q: What does “acquire” mean (vs. “learn”)?
A: To acquire a language means it becomes natural over time—more like “I can understand and respond,” not just “I memorized rules.”

Q: What makes TPRS different from traditional classes?
A: Traditional classes often start with grammar rules and memorization. TPRS starts with meaning and understanding, then builds speaking through stories and repetition that feels natural.

Q: Do you still teach grammar?
A: Yes—briefly and in context. Grammar supports what you’re already understanding, instead of being the main focus.

What Class Looks Like (TPRS in action)

Q: What happens in a typical class?
A: We make the language understandable, ask lots of guided questions, build a simple story, and use reading to lock it in.

Q: Why do you use stories?
A: Stories create high-interest repetition. Students hear and use the same phrases many times in context, which helps the brain retain it.

Q: Will I have to speak a lot?
A: You’ll be invited to participate, but there’s no pressure. Understanding comes first; speaking grows naturally as confidence builds.

Q: What if I’m shy or nervous?
A: That’s common. TPRS is designed to be supportive—students can answer in low-pressure ways (gestures, one-word answers, short phrases) as they grow.

Reading (a core part of TPRS)

Q: Why is reading included?
A: In TPRS, reading reinforces the language from class. It helps students see patterns, build vocabulary, and increase fluency faster.

Q: I don’t like reading—will it be hard?
A: No. Readings are short, level-appropriate, and connected to what we did in class.

Free Class + Getting Started

Q: Do you offer a free class?
A: Yes—your first class is free so you can experience TPRS and see how it feels before enrolling.

Q: What will the free class include?
A: A mini TPRS lesson: clear input, guided questions, a short story moment, and a quick reading—beginner-friendly.

Private Lessons (TPRS 1-on-1)

Q: Do you offer private lessons?
A: Yes. Private lessons use the same TPRS structure but are fully tailored to your goals, pace, and schedule.

Q: Who are private lessons best for?
A: Beginners, busy schedules, travel/work goals, students who want faster progress, or anyone who wants 1-on-1 support.

Spanish & English (Same Method)

Q: Do you teach English too?
A: Yes. We teach Spanish and English using the same TPRS approach—stories, comprehension, interaction, and reading.

Q: Can I take both Spanish and English?
A: Absolutely. Many students start with one and add the other later.

Levels, Progress, and Expectations

Q: I’m a complete beginner—can I start with TPRS?
A: Yes. TPRS is beginner-friendly because we keep language understandable and build confidence step-by-step.

Q: How fast will I improve?
A: Consistency matters most. Most students notice comprehension growing first, then more confident speaking over time.

Q: How do you measure progress?
A: We track progress through comprehension, participation, reading growth, and practical communication—not just memorized lists.

Logistics

Q: Are classes online or in-person?
A: We offer online classes, and any in-person options (if available) will be listed on the schedule.

Q: Is there homework?
A: Homework is light and optional (often a short reading or simple practice). The main progress comes from consistent, comprehensible input.

Q: What ages do you teach?
A: Kids, teens, and adults. Current offerings are listed on the Programs page.

Still Have Questions?

Q: I’m not sure what program to choose—what should I do?
A: Start with a free class, then we’ll help you pick the best next step (group or private) based on your goals.
